One of the biggest anime releases of 2025 failed to secure a nomination in Best Animated Feature or any other category.
Wicked: For Good
The sequel to the highly nominated Wicked was completely shut out of all 2026 Oscar nominations, receiving no nods in performance, craft, or technical categories.
How Are Oscar Nominations Decided?
Oscar nominations and winners are determined by members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS). The Academy is composed of over 10,000 film professionals, organised into 19 branches, including actors, directors, writers, producers, cinematographers, editors, composers, costume designers, and other craft disciplines.
- During the nominations phase, members vote within their own branch for most categories (for example, actors nominate actors; directors nominate directors).
- Best Picture nominations are an exception, as all eligible Academy members across every branch are allowed to vote in that category.
- Certain categories, such as International Feature Film, Documentary Feature, Visual Effects, Sound, and Short Films, go through preliminary voting rounds and shortlists before final nominations are selected.
- All nomination and final voting is conducted via secure, secret online ballots, with results tabulated by an independent accounting firm.
- In the final voting round, all active Academy members are eligible to vote for winners in every category, provided they have met the Academy’s film-viewing requirements.
